Retired Miami Police Sergeant Lury F. Bowen passed away on Friday, June 12, 2009. He was 85 years old.
Sergeant Bowen was born in Madison, Florida on November 17, 1923 and he joined the Miami Police Department on May 25, 1948. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on June 1, 1969 and retired from the Police Department on January 5th, 1977. For many years, he was a Patrol Supervisor and he also, worked in the Criminal Investigation Section for a period of time. Sergeant Bowen was one of the four Sergeants that came over from the old Black Precinct in 1963.
After his retirement, he returned to the department as a civilian and handled lobby security at the Central Station. Later on, he worked as a greeter at Police Headquarters where he made the retirees feel welcome when visiting as he greeted them with his big smile and booming voice.
